The Ciudad Perdida, or Lost City, is an ancient indegenous city high up in the Sierra Nevada. It was founded 650 years earlier than Peru’s Machu Picchu in around 800 AD. It had 2000 to 8000 inhabitants at its peak. It was found in 1975 by a group of treasure looters and has been under restoration and protection ever since.

Consisting of around 169 terraces, the city is connected through roads and plazas and can only be accessed from the river, 1200 steps below!

Treks to the site cost $600.000 COP ($350 USD) and can be done in 4, 5 or 6 days. The hike is about 44 km of walking in total, and requires a good level of fitness. The hike includes a number of river crossings and steep climbs and descents. It is a moderately difficult hike and you can expect to be wet and dirty for the duration of the trek.

Tours can be booked in advanced with the Drop Bear Hostel or upon arrival at reception.
